Scout Handbook and Skills

Use your Scout handbook as a reference for outdoor skills, first aid, knots, camping, navigation, and other requirements. Bring it to troop meetings and outings when appropriate.

Camping and Outdoor Skills

Being prepared is an important part of every Scouting adventure. Before a campout, review the trip information from troop leadership, check your equipment, and make sure you understand the plan.

Camping Checklist

Pack clothing appropriate for the weather, a sleeping bag, sleeping pad, personal hygiene items, water bottle, flashlight or headlamp, and any additional equipment listed for the outing. Avoid bringing unnecessary gear.

Outdoor Skills

Continue practicing knots, fire safety, navigation, campsite setup, cooking, Leave No Trace principles, and basic first aid. These skills help Scouts become more confident and self-reliant.

Safety and Preparedness

Follow instructions from troop leaders, understand the buddy system, stay hydrated, and speak up when something doesn't feel right. Arizona's heat, sun exposure, and changing weather make preparation especially important.

Information for Parents

Parents and guardians are important partners in the Scouting experience. These resources help families stay informed and support their Scouts as they learn to take greater responsibility.

Troop Leadership and Organization

Troop 389 is a Scout-led troop. Understanding how the troop operates helps Scouts take ownership of their experience.

  • Senior Patrol Leader (SPL): Leads the troop's youth leadership team and helps run troop meetings.
  • Patrol Leaders' Council (PLC): Helps plan the troop program, activities, and outings.
  • Patrol Leaders: Coordinate their patrols and help Scouts work together.
  • Adult Leaders: Mentor youth leaders, provide guidance, and oversee safety.
  • Advancement: Scoutmaster conferences and boards of review help Scouts reflect on their progress and meet applicable advancement requirements.

Scouts should speak with their patrol leader or Senior Patrol Leader when they have questions about troop activities. Adult leaders can help with advancement guidance, safety concerns, and other questions.
