Who We Are
Troop 389 is a scout-led troop in Maricopa, Arizona, built around outdoor adventure, leadership development, personal growth, and service to our community.
We believe Scouting is about more than earning badges or going camping. It's about learning to lead, becoming more self-reliant, building lasting friendships, and developing the confidence to take on new challenges.
Our Scouts take an active role in shaping their own Scouting experience. Youth leaders plan activities, run meetings, organize campouts, and lead their fellow Scouts. Adult leaders provide guidance, mentorship, and supervision while giving youth the opportunity to learn through experience.
Whether a Scout is learning to pitch a tent for the first time, navigating a trail, working toward a new rank, or leading a patrol, every experience is an opportunity to grow.
What We Do
Scouting is best experienced by getting out there, trying new things, and learning together. Troop 389 offers a variety of activities designed to build practical skills, encourage exploration, and create memories that last a lifetime.
Monthly Campouts
We get outdoors throughout the year with tent camping, backpacking trips, and cabin stays. Scouts learn outdoor skills, prepare meals, work as a team, and gain confidence in a variety of environments and conditions.
High Adventure
For Scouts ready to push their limits, high-adventure opportunities offer exciting challenges through hiking, paddling, climbing, and exploring the outdoors. These experiences encourage preparation, perseverance, teamwork, and problem-solving.
Community Service
Giving back is an important part of Scouting. Through food drives, trail work, and community service projects, Scouts learn the value of helping others, taking responsibility, and making a positive difference in the places where they live.
Advancement and Merit Badges
Scouts develop practical skills, work toward rank advancement, and explore new interests through merit badges. From outdoor skills and first aid to science, technology, and personal development, advancement encourages Scouts to set goals and take ownership of their progress.
Our Leadership: Scout-Led, Adult-Mentored
One of the most important things about Troop 389 is that the Scouts lead the troop.
The Senior Patrol Leader and the Patrol Leaders' Council (PLC) help plan the troop's program, organize activities, coordinate meetings, and make decisions about upcoming adventures. Patrol leaders guide their patrols, help younger Scouts develop skills, and encourage everyone to contribute.
This approach gives Scouts real opportunities to practice leadership, communicate effectively, solve problems, and learn from both successes and mistakes.
Adult leaders serve as mentors and role models. They provide training, guidance, resources, and appropriate supervision while allowing youth leaders to take responsibility for the troop's activities.
Safety is always a priority. Our adult leadership team is background-checked and youth-protection trained, and leaders oversee activities to help ensure Scouts can learn, grow, and explore in an appropriate and safe environment.
What Makes Scouting Different?
Scouting gives young people opportunities to learn by doing. Instead of simply hearing about leadership, Scouts practice it. Instead of just reading about outdoor skills, they use them in the field.
Along the way, Scouts have opportunities to develop:
- Leadership: Plan activities, guide a team, and make decisions.
- Self-reliance: Learn practical skills and take responsibility for personal gear and tasks.
- Teamwork: Cooperate with others, support patrol members, and work toward shared goals.
- Resilience: Face challenges, adapt to changing situations, and keep going when things get difficult.
- Citizenship: Serve others and contribute to the community.
- Confidence: Try new experiences, learn from mistakes, and celebrate achievements.
Every Scout develops at their own pace. Our goal is to help each young person become more capable, confident, and prepared for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Parents and Families
Families play an important role in the success of Troop 389. Parents and guardians are welcome at troop meetings and Court of Honor ceremonies, where we recognize Scouts' achievements and celebrate their hard work and progress.
We encourage families to stay involved, ask questions, and learn about the troop's program. While Scouts take the lead in running the troop, parent support helps make our activities and adventures possible.
Whether your Scout is just starting out or already has outdoor experience, we're happy to help your family understand how the troop works and what to expect.
